Leeds United‘s recruitment since being promoted to the Premier League has been distinctive.
Simply over a 12 months in the past, they and Sunderland laid the blueprint for all newly promoted sides. Beforehand, these coming into England’s high flight had been thrown right into a pool of sharks and anticipated to swim.
Yr after 12 months, they have been despatched packing to the Championship on the first time of asking. Leeds and the Black Cats bucked that development.
The Whites, particularly, have finished an admirable job and the very fact they’ve misplaced simply as soon as in 2026/27 speaks volumes. Their greatest signings? Effectively, Tarik Muharemovic is definitely up there, however based mostly on objectives alone, you can not look previous Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
How Calvert-Lewin has change into one of many Premier League’s greatest
In the summertime of 2025, Leeds took an enormous punt. Of their quest to remain within the division, they knew they wanted objectives they usually turned to a free agent striker by the identify of Calvert-Lewin.
It was a chance because the centre-forward’s latest damage historical past had been extremely regarding. On high of that, he had scored simply 13 objectives in his ultimate three seasons at Everton.
It was no shock to see the Merseysiders launch him however that has been to the benefit of Daniel Farke who, because the German admits, has helped rework Calvert-Lewin into “the most effective English striker within the Premier League.”
The 29-year-old is not simply the most effective English striker; he is one of many highest within the high league, full cease.
From these ultimate three years of battle at Goodison Park, Calvert-Lewin is a person reworked. He is now again within the England setup and he is thriving.
Since arriving at Elland Street, solely 4 gamers have scored extra objectives within the Premier League than Calvert-Lewin.
He is probably the greatest, alright. A poacher with unimaginable penalty field instincts, there are only a few gamers in world soccer Farke would commerce Calvert-Lewin for.
He greater than deserves his position as back-up to Harry Kane for the Three Lions proper now.
Why Leeds want competitors for Calvert-Lewin
Calvert-Lewin has been so good that if you’re taking part in second fiddle at Leeds, it’s onerous to get previous him.
Leeds’ high scorer from their Championship promotion season in 2024/25, Joel Piroe, has already taken his depart and it could not be a shock to see Lukas Nmecha head for pastures new in January 2027.
Like his colleague within the ultimate third, he arrived on a free switch in the summertime of 2025 and, given the dearth of a price ticket, he is been a precious addition to Leeds’ ranks.
He has scored seven objectives in 45 matches, which, contemplating he has barely began, is a helpful tally. Alas, 2026/27 has been a battle for Nmecha.
The striker is but to seek out the online throughout eight appearances. He’s but to start out a Premier League recreation and he is not performed greater than 21 minutes in any fixture exterior of the EFL Cup.
So, heading into the brand new 12 months, Farke and his recruitment crew want to have a look at bolstering that space of the pitch.
How Leeds might discover competitors for Calvert-Lewin
Farke’s change in formation slightly below a 12 months in the past had largely led to Leeds taking part in with out out-and-out wingers.
Calvert-Lewin has at all times been the primary man in assault, however he has truly been a part of a two-pronged ahead line, one which’s often featured Noah Okafor.
The Swiss ended final time period within the type of his profession, netting six objectives in his ultimate seven outings of the marketing campaign. But, this season, he has only one aim to indicate for his efforts throughout 9 appearances in all competitions.
An enchancment is required, so how about Membership Brugge’s Nicolo Tresoldi? Effectively, he may not simply be the proper foil for Calvert-Lewin however he might additionally signify an improve on the England man.
Stories from Belgian publication Het Laatste Nieuws declare this week that various golf equipment, together with Everton, Leeds and Newcastle are sending scouts to observe the ahead in motion for his aspect once they face Lens within the Champions League on Wednesday evening.
They may face competitors from Arsenal for the German’s signature but when the Whites can surge ahead to the entrance of the queue and safe a deal, they are going to be getting their fingers on a mighty wonderful striker.
Reportedly valued at £50m, over the previous few years, Tresoldi has firmly established himself as the most effective striker within the Belgian high flight. This time period, pretty much as good as Leeds’ primary man has been once more, Tresoldi is obvious as soon as extra. He is on 9 objectives heading into that conflict with Lille from solely 12 appearances.

Effectively, when you do have to consider the standard distinction between the 2 leagues, final marketing campaign was a convincing success for Tresoldi who trumped Calvert-Lewin in most metrics.
For aerial duels, Leeds’ present striker is means clear, however then once more, he is among the greatest in that division in Europe.
For Tresoldi, he brings these Suarez-like qualities to the desk through his all-round profile. He isn’t simply able to find the online however he may act as the provision line, creating as many as 1.37 possibilities per 90 minutes within the Jupiler Professional League final time period.
That needs to be music to the ears of Calvert-Lewin who might look ahead to taking part in in a particularly productive two-pronged assault. Nonetheless, he also needs to be cautious. Tresoldi is not the kind of striker who involves play as your back-up; he’d need to be the primary man.
